In a major breakthrough for Nepal’s newest international airport, Flydubai is set to begin daily direct flights between Pokhara and Dubai from September 23, marking the first regular international commercial service from Pokhara International Airport to a major global aviation hub.
According to airport authorities, Nepal’s civil aviation regulator has approved Flydubai’s flight schedule, allowing the UAE-based carrier to operate daily Dubai–Pokhara–Dubai services. The approval comes after a Flydubai technical team conducted a comprehensive assessment of the airport’s security, safety standards, and operational readiness.
A Turning Point for Pokhara International Airport
Since its inauguration on January 1, 2023, Pokhara International Airport has struggled to attract sustained international traffic despite being built at a cost of nearly NPR 22 billion. While the airport was envisioned as Nepal’s third international gateway after Tribhuvan International Airport and Gautam Buddha International Airport, regular international operations have remained limited.
Apart from a handful of charter flights and a short-lived Pokhara–Lhasa service operated by Himalaya Airlines, the airport has largely depended on domestic traffic since opening.
Flydubai’s entry therefore represents a significant milestone in transforming the airport into a functioning international aviation hub.
Boost for Tourism and Connectivity
The direct Dubai connection is expected to dramatically improve Pokhara’s global accessibility. Dubai serves as one of the world's busiest transit hubs, connecting travelers to more than 300 destinations across the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Tourism stakeholders believe the route could:
- Increase international tourist arrivals directly into Pokhara.
- Reduce dependency on Kathmandu as Nepal’s sole major aviation gateway.
- Support hotel, hospitality, and tourism-related investments.
- Enhance convenience for Nepali migrant workers traveling to and from Gulf countries.
- Strengthen Pokhara’s position as Nepal’s tourism capital.
Local authorities have described the development as more than just a new airline route, viewing it as a strategic opportunity to internationalize Pokhara’s economy and tourism industry.
Economic Importance
The airport’s inability to attract regular international airlines has long been a concern because the project was financed largely through external borrowing. Industry experts have argued that increasing international traffic is essential to improving the airport’s economic viability.
Tourism entrepreneurs estimate that investments worth nearly NPR 100 billion have been made in hotels, resorts, restaurants, and tourism infrastructure in anticipation of greater international arrivals after the airport’s construction.
A successful Flydubai operation could therefore provide the momentum needed to unlock those investments and encourage additional tourism-related development.
Challenges Remain
Despite this positive development, industry participants note that further policy reforms will be necessary to maximize the airport’s potential. Tourism and aviation stakeholders continue to call for:
- Easier regulatory procedures for international airlines.
- More bilateral air service agreements.
- Direct connections to major Indian and Chinese cities.
- Greater incentives for airlines launching new routes from Pokhara.
The success of the Pokhara–Dubai route will likely be closely watched by both the government and international carriers considering future operations.

For decades, Pokhara’s international airport remained a dream on paper. Although the infrastructure was finally completed, the lack of international flights raised questions about its commercial viability. Flydubai’s decision to launch daily services could become the breakthrough needed to establish Pokhara as a genuine international aviation gateway and strengthen Nepal’s tourism-driven economy.
