Empowering Your Financial Journey

Share Sale Planned by Mid-January as Part of Digital Economy and Tech Hub Vision

Kathmandu โ€” The Government of Nepal has announced plans to sell a portion of its ownership in Nepal Telecom as part of a broader strategy to promote public participation in state-owned enterprises and accelerate the country's digital transformation.

Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle made the announcement while presenting the national budget for fiscal year 2083/84 in the Federal Parliament.

According to the budget speech, the federal government will retain a 66 percent ownership stake in Nepal Telecom while divesting the remaining shares to the general public by mid-January 2027 (Poush-end 2083).

Public Share Offering Planned Within Current Fiscal Year

The government stated that the share sale will be completed within the current fiscal year, allowing greater public ownership in one of Nepal's largest and most profitable telecommunications companies.

The move is expected to broaden investment opportunities for Nepali citizens while improving corporate governance and market participation.

Funds to Support Nepal's Tech Hub Ambitions

Finance Minister Wagle said that the proceeds generated from the sale of Nepal Telecom shares will be invested in initiatives aimed at transforming Nepal into a regional technology hub.

The government has identified digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, information technology, innovation, and startup development as key priorities in the upcoming fiscal year.

Officials believe that mobilizing capital from state-owned enterprises can help finance major technology and digital economy projects without placing additional pressure on public finances.

Part of a Wider State-Owned Enterprise Reform Program

The proposed share divestment is part of the government's broader reform agenda focused on increasing efficiency, transparency, and accountability in public enterprises.

In recent budget announcements, the government has also revealed plans to offer shares of other state-owned institutions to the public, signaling a gradual shift toward greater private and public participation in key sectors of the economy.

Potential Impact on Investors and the Capital Market

Market analysts believe the public offering of Nepal Telecom shares could become one of the most significant developments in Nepal's capital market in recent years.

As one of the country's leading telecommunications providers, Nepal Telecom has a strong presence across mobile, internet, and digital services, making it an attractive investment opportunity for retail and institutional investors alike.

Further details regarding the size of the offering, pricing, regulatory approvals, and listing arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming months.
