The Nepal government is set to present its national budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2083/84 on Friday, as Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle prepares to address a joint session of the Federal Parliament at 4:00 PM.

The annual budget presentation comes in line with the constitutional provision requiring the government to unveil the national budget every year on the 15th of Jestha, a date that also coincides with Republic Day. Ahead of the highly anticipated session, Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal has instructed all lawmakers to be seated inside parliament by 3:45 PM.

A day prior to the budget announcement, Dr. Wagle presented the Economic Survey for Fiscal Year 2082/83 before both houses of parliament, outlining the country’s current economic condition and laying the foundation for Friday’s fiscal roadmap.

The National Planning Commission has set a budget ceiling of approximately Rs. 18 Kharba 90 Arba for the upcoming fiscal year. Speaking before the National Assembly’s Development and Good Governance Committee, Dr. Wagle acknowledged the financial constraints facing the government.

He noted that while national resources remain limited, public expectations for development continue to grow, making it a challenging task to balance fiscal discipline with the need for economic progress.

Despite these limitations, the finance minister has signaled that this year’s budget will seek to move beyond conventional approaches. Stressing that Nepal has already achieved political transformation, he stated that the country must now focus on economic transformation.

According to Dr. Wagle, the government intends to shift away from the traditional budget structure by channeling public resources and encouraging private investment in high-return and employment-generating sectors such as agriculture, tourism, energy, and information technology.

The private sector is expected to play a central role in the upcoming budget, with plans for simplified regulations, tax flexibility, and stronger public-private partnerships in infrastructure development expected to feature prominently.

The upcoming budget is being closely watched as it is expected to outline Nepal’s broader economic direction and set the tone for development priorities in the fiscal year ahead.
