Nepalgunj Customs Office has collected less than two-thirds of its annual revenue target in the first ten months of the current fiscal year 2082/83, leaving significant pressure to meet the remaining target within the final two months.
According to office chief Janardan Paudel, the customs office was assigned a revenue target of NPR 24.54 billion for the fiscal year. By the end of Baisakh, it had collected NPR 16.73 billion, which equals 68.2 percent of the annual target. This means around 32 percent, or approximately NPR 7.8 billion, still needs to be collected within Jestha and Ashadh.
Monthly performance data shows that the office failed to meet its target in any month of the current fiscal year. Revenue collection stood at 74 percent in Shrawan, 70 percent in Bhadra, 88 percent in Ashoj, 72 percent in Kartik, 83 percent in Mangsir, 83 percent in Poush, 88 percent in Magh, and 88 percent in Falgun. In Chaitra, performance improved to 98.37 percent, but it again dropped to 85.38 percent in Baisakh.
Compared to previous fiscal years, the shortfall is not a new trend. In fiscal year 2081/82, the office achieved 74.64 percent of its annual target, while in 2080/81, the figure stood at 63.35 percent. Although this year shows some improvement compared to earlier years, it still remains significantly below the target.
Officials had expected revenue growth following the operation of the Integrated Check Post at the Nepal–India border in Jamunaha, which was expected to boost trade flow and customs revenue. However, that expectation has not yet been fully realized, and the shortfall continues.
Customs experts suggest that issues such as import structure, informal cross-border trade, and weaknesses in border management must be addressed to achieve revenue targets. With only two months remaining in the fiscal year, the Nepalgunj Customs Office now faces a critical period to close the gap.
