Alphabet’s $112 Billion Profit Was Historic — But SpaceX Was the Real Story

Alphabet reported one of the most extraordinary quarterly profits ever recorded by a public company, posting $112 billion in net income for the second quarter of 2026. At first glance, the number appeared almost unbelievable given that the company generated $120 billion in revenue during the same period.

A profit margin approaching 100% would be virtually impossible for a business of Alphabet’s size and complexity. The explanation lies not in a sudden explosion of profitability from Google Search, YouTube, or Cloud, but in a massive accounting gain tied to SpaceX.

How SpaceX Changed the Quarter

Alphabet was an early investor in Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), and that investment has become one of the most successful venture bets in Silicon Valley history.

Following SpaceX’s public listing, accounting rules require Alphabet to mark the value of its investment to market. That means changes in the value of the SpaceX stake are recorded as gains or losses in net income, even if Alphabet does not sell any shares.

As of June 30, 2026, Alphabet valued its SpaceX investment at $94.1 billion.

The company reported approximately $99 billion in gains on securities during the quarter, meaning the overwhelming majority of the headline profit came from the revaluation of its SpaceX holdings rather than from its core operating businesses.

In other words, Alphabet did not suddenly earn $112 billion from advertising and cloud computing in a single quarter. Most of that figure reflected paper gains from a highly valuable equity investment.

The Gain Could Reverse in Q3

The accounting treatment works both ways.

Since June 30, SpaceX shares have fallen more than 30% from their post-IPO highs. If the stock remains significantly lower through the end of the third quarter, Alphabet could be forced to record a substantial unrealized loss on the same investment.

That means net income could swing dramatically from quarter to quarter depending on SpaceX’s market value, even if Alphabet’s underlying business continues performing well.

For investors trying to evaluate the health of Alphabet’s operations, the headline net income number is therefore misleading.

The Metric That Matters More

A better way to judge Alphabet’s performance is to focus on operating income, which excludes investment gains and losses.

On that basis, Alphabet still delivered an exceptionally strong quarter:

  • Operating income increased 30% year over year.
  • It was one of the company’s strongest operating performances in roughly three years.
  • The growth came from improvements across advertising, YouTube, and especially Google Cloud.

A company generating 30% operating-income growth at Alphabet’s scale is unusual. Most mature large-cap businesses grow operating profit at single-digit or low double-digit rates, making Alphabet’s performance stand out even after stripping out the SpaceX effect.

Google Cloud Is Becoming a Bigger Profit Engine

The strongest part of Alphabet’s business continues to be Google Cloud.

The cloud division reported:

  • 82% year-over-year revenue growth
  • 35.6% operating margin

That margin is particularly important because it is higher than Alphabet’s companywide operating margin of about 34%.

Fast-growing businesses are often less profitable than the parent company because they require heavy investment. Google Cloud is now doing the opposite: it is growing rapidly while generating superior margins, which gives Alphabet a powerful combination of revenue expansion and operating leverage.

As cloud becomes a larger share of total revenue, it could provide a meaningful boost to Alphabet’s overall profitability.

AI Spending Is Driving the Momentum

Much of the recent strength in Google Cloud has been tied to the ongoing artificial intelligence infrastructure boom.

Enterprises are spending heavily on:

  • AI training workloads,
  • inference computing,
  • data analytics,
  • and cloud-based AI tools.

Alphabet has been investing aggressively in its own AI models, custom chips, and cloud infrastructure to compete with Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services.

As long as corporate AI spending remains strong, Google Cloud is likely to remain one of Alphabet’s fastest-growing businesses, helping support continued growth in both revenue and operating income.

Why the Quarter Was Still Impressive

Even after adjusting for the SpaceX windfall, Alphabet’s results were far from ordinary.

The company demonstrated:

  • strong double-digit revenue growth,
  • rapid expansion in cloud computing,
  • improving operating leverage,
  • and continued strength in its core advertising business.

The SpaceX gain may have turned the quarter into a headline-grabbing record, but it should be viewed as an extraordinary investment event layered on top of an already strong operating performance.

What Investors Should Watch Next

Going forward, investors should pay attention to two separate stories:

1. Core Alphabet Operations

  • Revenue growth in Search and YouTube
  • Continued expansion of Google Cloud
  • Operating margin trends
  • AI monetization across consumer and enterprise products

2. SpaceX-Related Volatility

  • Changes in the valuation of Alphabet’s $94.1 billion SpaceX stake
  • Potential unrealized gains or losses flowing through net income
  • The impact of SpaceX’s stock-price swings on reported earnings

The second factor could create unusually volatile quarterly net-income figures that may not reflect the true trajectory of Alphabet’s underlying business.

The Bottom Line

Alphabet’s $112 billion second-quarter profit was historic, but the number came with a very large asterisk.

Roughly $99 billion of gains on securities — primarily related to SpaceX — drove the majority of the reported net income. Because those gains are largely unrealized, they are not a reliable measure of Alphabet’s ongoing earning power.

The more important takeaway is that Alphabet’s operating business remains exceptionally strong:

  • operating income grew 30%,
  • Google Cloud revenue surged 82%,
  • and the cloud division generated margins higher than the company average.

So while the headline profit figure may not be sustainable, the underlying trends suggest that Alphabet continues to benefit significantly from the AI-driven expansion of cloud computing and digital services.

For long-term investors, the real story is not that Alphabet briefly earned almost as much profit as revenue — it is that its core business is still growing at a pace that few companies of its size can match, even before counting the enormous value created by its early SpaceX investment.
