Sudurpashchim Province is set to strengthen its renewable energy capacity with the development of the 28.30 MW Middle Chameliya Hydropower Project on the Chameliya River in Darchula district. Promoted by Darchula Power Company, the run-of-river project will be constructed in Marma Rural Municipality within the protected Api Nampa Conservation Area. The project has already crossed several key regulatory and financial milestones, bringing it closer to the construction phase.

The Department of Electricity Development (DoED) granted the project's generation license in March 2025, following the approval of its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in March 2024. To accommodate minor design changes and the relocation of certain structures along the river's left bank, developer Chameliya Power Limited has also received permission to conduct a Supplementary Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA). The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Environment has recently invited public feedback on the supplementary study as part of the environmental approval process.

Commercial groundwork for the project has also been completed. The developer signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) in October 2023, while financial closure was successfully achieved in June 2025. Once completed, all electricity generated by the plant will be transmitted to the national grid through the NEA's nearby Balach Substation. Located around 30 kilometers northwest of Gokuleshwar, the project is strategically positioned between the 40 MW Upper Chameliya Hydropower Project upstream and the 30 MW Chameliya Khola Hydropower Project downstream.

The Middle Chameliya Hydropower Project is expected to generate approximately 118.52 GWh of electricity during the wet season and 67.10 GWh during the dry season, significantly contributing to Nepal's growing energy supply. With an estimated investment of Rs. 6.236 billion, construction is targeted for completion within three years, further supporting the country's long-term goal of expanding clean energy production and improving electricity availability.
