Australia’s economy expanded at a slower-than-expected pace during the first quarter of 2026, according to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by just 0.3% between January and March, reflecting a significant slowdown compared to the previous quarter.
The latest growth rate is considerably weaker than the 0.9% expansion recorded during the final three months of 2025. This means quarterly economic growth has fallen to nearly one-third of the level seen in the preceding quarter.
On an annual basis, however, the economy remained relatively stable. Australia's GDP increased by 2.5% in the 12 months ending March 2026, matching the growth rate recorded during the same period a year earlier.
A major factor behind the weaker quarterly performance was a decline in government spending. According to the report, government consumption expenditure fell by 0.2%, marking its weakest quarterly performance since September 2022. In contrast, household consumption remained positive, increasing by 0.5% during the quarter.
The mining sector was among the hardest-hit industries, with output declining by 1.5% due to unfavorable weather conditions. The slowdown in mining production also affected the country’s external trade performance.
Exports fell by 1.1%, primarily due to lower shipments of coal and iron ore, while imports increased by 2.1% during the same period. The combination of weaker exports and higher imports further weighed on overall economic growth.
Economic Highlights
| Indicator | Performance |
|---|---|
| Q1 2026 GDP Growth | 0.3% |
| Q4 2025 GDP Growth | 0.9% |
| Annual GDP Growth (12 Months to March 2026) | 2.5% |
| Government Consumption Spending | -0.2% |
| Household Consumption Spending | +0.5% |
| Mining Sector Output | -1.5% |
| Exports | -1.1% |
| Imports | +2.1% |
The latest figures suggest that while Australia's economy continues to grow, challenges including lower government spending, adverse weather impacts on mining production, and weaker export performance have slowed momentum at the beginning of 2026.
