World Food Safety Day Highlights Global Health Risks From Contaminated Food

Empowering Your Financial Journey

World Food Safety Day is being observed across the globe today with various awareness programs aimed at promoting safe food practices and reducing the burden of foodborne diseases.

The observance comes amid growing concern over the significant health risks posed by contaminated food and water. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 600 million people worldwide fall ill each year after consuming unsafe food, while approximately 420,000 people die annually from foodborne diseases.

The United Nations General Assembly officially designated June 7 as World Food Safety Day through a resolution adopted in 2018. Since 2019, the day has been celebrated globally under the joint leadership of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Food Safety: A Foundation of Public Health

Access to sufficient quantities of safe and nutritious food is essential for human health, well-being, and sustainable development. However, food contamination remains a major global challenge.

Foodborne illnesses are commonly caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, and harmful chemical substances that enter the human body through contaminated food or water. Because many of these hazards are invisible to the naked eye, ensuring food safety requires continuous monitoring and strict adherence to safety standards throughout the food supply chain.

Health experts emphasize that food safety is not limited to the final product consumed by individuals. It involves every stage of the food chain, from production and harvesting to processing, storage, transportation, distribution, preparation, and consumption.

Proper implementation of food safety measures at each stage can significantly reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and protect public health.

Children Face the Greatest Risk

The impact of unsafe food is particularly severe among young children.

According to WHO estimates, children under the age of five bear nearly 40 percent of the global burden of foodborne diseases. Every year, approximately 125,000 children in this age group lose their lives due to illnesses caused by contaminated food.

Foodborne diseases also disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, including women, children, migrants, conflict-affected communities, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

The consequences extend beyond health concerns. Foodborne illnesses can strain healthcare systems, reduce productivity, affect educational outcomes, and create economic losses for families, businesses, and national economies.

Strengthening Food Safety Systems

Experts argue that ensuring food safety requires coordinated action from governments, food producers, businesses, scientists, civil society organizations, and consumers.

Key measures include strengthening food safety regulations, improving access to clean drinking water, promoting good agricultural practices, implementing effective food safety management systems, and increasing public awareness about safe food handling and consumption.

Advances in food testing technologies, supply chain monitoring, and international food safety standards have helped improve food safety worldwide. However, challenges such as climate change, population growth, globalization of food trade, and emerging foodborne pathogens continue to create new risks.

As food systems become increasingly interconnected, maintaining food safety has become a shared global responsibility.

Food Safety and Sustainable Development

World Food Safety Day also highlights the close relationship between food safety, public health, agriculture, trade, tourism, and sustainable development.

Unsafe food not only threatens human health but can also undermine consumer confidence, disrupt trade, damage tourism industries, and hinder economic growth.

This year's observance reinforces the message that "Food Safety is Everyone's Responsibility." The campaign calls on all stakeholders to play an active role in ensuring that food remains safe from farm to table.

By promoting stronger food safety practices and greater public awareness, experts believe millions of illnesses and thousands of preventable deaths can be avoided each year, contributing to healthier communities and a more sustainable future.
