Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has announced the introduction of newly printed Rs. 500 banknotes into circulation beginning from Asar 3, 2083. The central bank stated that the newly issued notes will maintain the same dimensions, colour scheme, and overall design structure as the existing Rs. 500 denomination currently in use.
The new banknotes will carry the signature of Governor Dr. Bishwanath Paudel and will be issued with serial numbers ranging from Jha 000001 to Ta 999999.
According to NRB’s Currency Management Department, the front side of the new note continues to feature Nepal’s iconic Mount Everest as its primary visual element. The note also includes several security features designed to improve authenticity verification and reduce the risk of counterfeiting.
Among the key security elements are a Laligurans (Rhododendron) watermark, an embedded security thread, and a colour-changing security image. The note additionally includes an image of Kubera positioned on the right side of Mount Everest. This feature changes appearance depending on the viewing angle — appearing golden when viewed directly and turning green when tilted.
The central bank stated that the updated issuance is part of regular currency management and circulation procedures and does not change the value, usability, or legal status of existing Rs. 500 notes already in circulation.
All previously issued Rs. 500 notes will continue to remain valid for transactions alongside the newly introduced series.
With the rollout of the new notes, NRB aims to maintain secure cash circulation while enhancing public confidence through updated security and identification features.
