According to the Economic Survey 2082/83, China accounted for 48 percent of the total approved foreign investment in Nepal as of Falgun 2082. India held a 17.9 percent share, while other countries collectively accounted for 34.1 percent.
China also leads in terms of the number of approved projects. Of the total approved projects, 45.5 percent involve Chinese investment, while India’s share stands at 11.9 percent and other countries account for 42.6 percent, according to the Economic Survey.
Currently, foreign investment in Nepal can be approved through two routes: the automatic route and the approval route. By Falgun 2082, a total of 7,951 projects had received approval for foreign investment worth Rs. 625.58 billion. Among these, 968 projects were approved through the automatic route and 6,983 through the approval route via the Department of Industry. These approved projects are expected to generate employment opportunities for around 362,545 people.
According to the Economic Survey released by the government, foreign investment worth Rs. 40.70 billion was approved in 554 projects during the current fiscal year 2082/83 up to Falgun alone. Of these, 377 projects were approved through the automatic route and 177 through the approval route.
During the same period in the previous fiscal year, foreign investment worth Rs. 44.66 billion had been approved in 427 industries. This indicates that while the number of projects has increased, the total investment amount has slightly declined.
Sector-wise, the service sector received the highest share of foreign investment approvals at 28.3 percent. The energy sector accounted for 23.03 percent, while the manufacturing sector received 13.18 percent. The mining industry received the lowest foreign investment approval, accounting for only 1.3 percent, according to the Economic Survey.
