Special Ceremony Held at Tundikhel in Presence of President Ramchandra Paudel
Nepal is celebrating its 18th Republic Day today with special ceremonies, cultural programs, and official events taking place across the country.
A grand national ceremony has been organized at the Army Pavilion, Tundikhel, Kathmandu, in the presence of Ramchandra Paudel along with high-ranking government officials, political leaders, diplomats, and security personnel.
The Government of Nepal has declared Jestha 15 as a National Day and announced a public holiday nationwide to mark the historic occasion.
Special State Ceremony at Tundikhel
The Republic Day celebration at Tundikhel includes the participation of the President, Prime Minister, Speaker of the House, Chief Justice, ministers, senior officials, and representatives from various sectors.
During the ceremony, the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force Nepal are presenting march-pasts, national salutes, musical performances, and cultural displays showcasing Nepal’s diversity and national identity.
Nepali embassies abroad are also organizing lamp-lighting ceremonies and exchanging greetings to commemorate the day. Various public rallies, discussions, and civic programs are being held by citizens and organizations across Nepal.
Uncertainty Over Prime Minister Balen Shah’s Presence
However, uncertainty remains regarding the attendance of Prime Minister Balen Shah at today’s special ceremony.
A few days earlier, Shah reportedly stated that he would not personally address the event and instead requested President Ramchandra Paudel to deliver the address. Following this, questions have arisen regarding his participation in the ceremony, with some critics even questioning his commitment toward the republican system.
The Historic Journey Toward Republic Nepal
Nepal officially became a Federal Democratic Republic on Jestha 15, 2065, ending the 238-year-old Shah monarchy.
The movement toward republicanism intensified after the 12-point agreement between the then Seven Party Alliance and the then Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) following direct rule and controversial steps taken by then-King Gyanendra Shah.
The nationwide People’s Movement of 2062/63 lasted for 19 days and significantly changed Nepal’s political landscape.
Following the restoration of Parliament, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, and the drafting of the Interim Constitution, Nepal held its first Constituent Assembly election on Chaitra 28, 2064.
On Jestha 15, 2065, the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly declared Nepal a Federal Democratic Republic by an overwhelming majority vote of 560 against 4.
End of Monarchy and Rise of Democratic Representation
The establishment of the republic ended the centuries-old feudal system where the king’s descendants automatically inherited the nation’s highest position.
Today, any citizen of Nepal can become the Head of State through democratic and constitutional processes. Following the republic’s establishment, leaders including Ram Baran Yadav, Bidya Devi Bhandari, and Ramchandra Paudel have served as Presidents of Nepal.
According to Nepal’s Constitution, sovereignty and state power now fully rest with the Nepali people, who elect their leaders through periodic democratic elections.
Federalism and Inclusive Representation
The republican system also introduced federalism in Nepal, decentralizing state power from Singha Durbar to provincial and local governments.
It further ensured proportional representation and participation of women, Dalits, Indigenous communities, Madhesis, Tharus, and other historically marginalized groups in various state structures.
Republic Day is therefore seen not only as the end of monarchy, but also as a symbol of democracy, inclusion, federalism, and people’s sovereignty in modern Nepal.
