Major Milestone Achieved in Nepal’s Largest FDI-Based Hydropower Project
The under-construction 216 MW Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project has successfully completed the installation and testing operation of one of its three weir gates, marking a significant milestone in the project’s hydromechanical construction works.
The project, being developed under direct foreign investment led by Korean companies, uses weir gates to control river flow, divert water into tunnels for power generation, maintain reservoir water levels, and safely discharge excess water back into the river system.
Project officials stated that the successful installation and testing of the gate according to technical standards is expected to accelerate overall construction progress and support timely completion of the project.
Coordination Between Experts and Stakeholders
The installation and operation testing of the weir gate was completed through continuous coordination among the project management team, technical experts, contractors, and other concerned stakeholders.
Officials said quality assurance, safety standards, and environmental guidelines were given high priority throughout the construction process.
The completion ceremony was attended by several high-level officials, including Mohan Acharya, Sagar Raj Gautam, Yong Ki Lee, Park Tae-Young, and Man Devi Shrestha.
Korea-Nepal Energy Cooperation Expected to Strengthen
Speaking at the event, South Korean Ambassador Park Tae-Young expressed confidence that the completion of the Korean government-backed hydropower project would take Nepal-Korea energy cooperation to a new level.
The dam and associated structures of the project are being constructed in Haku area of Aamachhodingmo Rural Municipality-1, Rasuwa, while the underground powerhouse is being built in Uttargaya Rural Municipality-1.
The Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project is currently the largest hydropower project under construction in Nepal through direct foreign investment. The electricity generated from the project will primarily be used for domestic consumption.
Tunnel Construction and Electro-Mechanical Works Progressing
The project’s main construction works began in Poush 2078. According to project officials, excavation of the 9.5-kilometer-long main tunnel has already been completed, and concrete lining work is currently underway.
The excavation of the technically challenging 292-meter vertical shaft tunnel has also been successfully completed.
Civil construction works of the underground powerhouse have been completed, while installation of turbines, generators, and other electro-mechanical equipment is currently in progress.
The project aims to complete equipment installation by December 2026. Overall physical progress of the project has reached approximately 82 percent.
Construction activities were affected by floods in the Trishuli River during 2024 and 2025. Despite these setbacks, the project is targeting completion by mid-2027.
The Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract is being handled by Doosan Enerbility.
Project Expected to Produce 1.53 Billion Units of Electricity Annually
The Upper Trishuli-1 project is expected to generate approximately 1.533 billion units of electricity annually.
Of the total production, 38.75 percent will be generated during the dry winter season, while 61.25 percent will be produced during the monsoon season.
Electricity generated by the project will be connected to Nepal’s national transmission system through the Nepal Electricity Authority’s Trishuli-3B Hub Substation. A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between the project company and the Nepal Electricity Authority has already been completed.
Due to its proximity to Kathmandu’s major load center and its ability to generate 104 MW of firm energy even during winter, the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project is considered one of Nepal’s most strategically important energy projects.
