Tata Electronics, one of the flagship companies of the Tata Group, has reportedly become the target of a major cyberattack, with hackers allegedly stealing sensitive company data and publishing parts of it on the dark web.
According to reports, more than 200,000 confidential files were exposed in the breach, including documents said to contain component designs, specification papers, and highly sensitive technical materials linked to two of Tata Electronics’ major global customers—Apple and Tesla.
Despite the incident, Tata Electronics stated that its business operations remain unaffected and that normal commercial activities continue without disruption.
Apple Launches Internal Cybersecurity Review
According to Indian media reports, Apple’s global cybersecurity team has initiated an investigation and technical assessment following the reported data exposure.
Apple has reportedly stated that, at this stage, there is no indication that the incident poses an immediate operational threat to its business activities.
‘World Leaks’ Group Claims Responsibility
Cybersecurity researchers have linked the attack to a ransomware group known as World Leaks, which allegedly infiltrated Tata Electronics’ systems and later published data on the dark web.
The group has reportedly claimed responsibility for the incident and has previously been associated with cyberattacks targeting major international companies.
Researchers examining the leaked information stated that approximately 630 gigabytes (GB) of data containing more than 200,000 files and folders appeared online.
Apple and Tesla Documents Allegedly Included in Leak
According to reports from cybersecurity investigators, multiple folders referencing Apple were identified within the leaked dataset.
Some reportedly carried names linked to factory-related information and included technical specifications associated with manufacturing processes.
Among the materials reportedly discovered was a document describing quality inspection standards related to smartphone circuit board components.
Investigators also reported finding files connected to Tesla-related parts and product documentation.
One folder reportedly referenced a North America charge-port controller project, while another document allegedly contained confidential assembly-related information connected to vehicle development projects.
However, the authenticity, scope, and operational impact of these materials have not been independently verified publicly.
Employee Information Also Reportedly Exposed
Cybersecurity researchers reviewing the leaked dataset claimed that the exposure extended beyond technical files.
According to those reports, archived emails, event logs, and copies of passports belonging to company personnel—including foreign employees—were also found among the leaked materials.
Another researcher indicated that portions of the data may have been accessible on the dark web since June 10.
Reports of Ransom Demands
Sources familiar with the matter reportedly indicated that Tata Electronics received calls and messages demanding ransom following the breach.
The company has not publicly confirmed details regarding any ransom demand, and India’s national cybersecurity agency has not released an official statement regarding the matter.
Hosur iPhone Assembly Operations Also Referenced
Among the allegedly leaked materials were files connected to Tata’s major iPhone assembly facility located in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.
Reports indicated that some employees involved in iPhone assembly operations had already been informed internally about the incident.
Tata Electronics currently accounts for roughly one-third of iPhone production in India, while the remaining production is handled primarily by other manufacturing partners.
A New Challenge for Apple’s Supply Chain Expansion in India
The incident adds another layer of pressure to Apple’s expanding supply chain strategy in India.
Tata has become one of Apple’s most important manufacturing partners outside China as India continues efforts to strengthen its position as a global electronics manufacturing hub.
The development also follows earlier cybersecurity concerns affecting businesses connected to the broader Tata Group.
What Are the Dark Web and Ransomware?
Dark Web
The dark web refers to a hidden part of the internet that is not indexed by standard search engines. Access generally requires specialized software and private networks. While it can have legitimate uses, it is also known for hosting anonymous marketplaces and illegally distributed data.
Ransomware
Ransomware is a form of malicious software designed to restrict access to systems or data. Attackers may encrypt files or threaten to release stolen information unless payment demands are met. Modern ransomware incidents increasingly involve both system disruption and data exfiltration.
