The Office of the Problematic Cooperative Management Committee has released its monthly progress report for Jestha, showing notable developments in both returning savings to depositors and recovering outstanding loans from borrowers linked to troubled cooperatives.
According to the report, a total of 1,452 depositors from eight problematic cooperatives received savings refunds amounting to Rs. 5.9 million during the month. The committee stated that most of the refunded amount was distributed to small depositors with savings balances below Rs. 10,000.
The cooperatives involved in the refund process include Agriculture Development Multipurpose Cooperative, Kantipur Saving and Credit Cooperative, Pashupati Saving Cooperative, Nagarik Kalyan Cooperative, Oriental Cooperative, Gorkha Saving Cooperative, Shiv Shikhar Cooperative, and Laligurans Multipurpose Cooperative. The committee explained that the repayments were made primarily through funds recovered from borrowers of those institutions.
Loan recovery efforts also showed progress during the month. The committee recovered a total of Rs. 12.046 million in outstanding loans from borrowers associated with 12 problematic cooperatives. In addition, savings reconciliation amounting to Rs. 5.151 million was completed for 122 depositors.
The cooperatives involved in loan recovery and reconciliation activities include Oriental, Tulsi, Agriculture Development, Ideal Yamuna, Shiv Shikhar, Standard Saving, Laligurans, Kantipur, Gautamshree, Pashupati, Gorkha, and Nepal Cooperative Financial Institution.
The report further noted that around 44,000 pending compensation claims are still undergoing phased verification and review. To improve service delivery, a dedicated help desk has been launched to assist depositors with claim verification and corrections.
The committee has also intensified efforts to identify and trace assets registered under the names of current and former operators, managers, and board members of problematic cooperatives. Strategic teams have been mobilized to strengthen asset recovery and investigation processes.
To improve operational efficiency, software is being developed to calculate borrowersโ liabilities more accurately, and training programs for staff have already begun.
Institutional restructuring has also been carried out within the committee office, with a new organizational structure approved and responsibilities reassigned among employees.
During Jestha alone, the committee held 16 meetings and made 189 separate decisions related to cooperative management, claim processing, recovery measures, and administrative improvements.
The office further stated that upgrades are underway for its online claim management system so that depositors will be able to track the status of their claims independently. Identification and restriction measures targeting borrowers of problematic cooperatives, along with preparation of multi-generational background records, are also being accelerated as part of broader recovery efforts.
