Electricity generation from three hydropower projects operating in the Likhu River corridor has come to a complete halt after local residents obstructed operations, disrupting a combined installed capacity of 161 MW. The shutdown has continued for two consecutive days and has already caused financial losses worth several crores of rupees to the project developers.

Residents from Ramechhap and Solukhumbu districts have launched protests against the project company’s plan to issue an Initial Public Offering (IPO) at a premium price. Locals are demanding that shares allocated to project-affected communities be offered at the face value of Rs. 100 per share instead of a premium rate. As demonstrations intensified, project operations and electricity production were directly affected.

The project developer, however, maintains that the IPO process is being carried out in accordance with the regulations of the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON). According to the company, all required approvals from relevant authorities have already been secured, and the demand to provide shares only at face value does not align with existing legal provisions.

The company estimates that more than Rs. 4 crore in losses have already been incurred within just two days due to the production shutdown. Concerns are growing that prolonged disruption could significantly increase both operational and financial impacts.

Efforts are now underway to restore generation and resolve the dispute. Relevant authorities and representatives of Nepal’s energy producers have initiated discussions and facilitation measures aimed at finding common ground between local communities and the company so that power production can resume as soon as possible.
