Representatives from Iran and the United States held an approximately 80-minute high-level meeting in Switzerland on Sunday in an effort to ease growing tensions in the Middle East and explore a path toward a longer-term peace arrangement. However, significant disagreements emerged during the initial phase of discussions, preventing immediate progress.
According to Iranian state media, Tehran maintained that further negotiations cannot move forward until the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah is fully addressed. Iranian officials reportedly emphasized that any long-term agreement would require broader regional stability rather than a temporary arrangement.
Although both sides participated in direct discussions, no formal agreement has been reached regarding when the next round of talks will take place. The lack of a timeline highlights continued uncertainty over future diplomatic engagement.
Officials from Pakistan and Qatar participated in the meeting as mediators, aiming to facilitate communication and maintain conditions for continued dialogue between both parties.
According to BBC reports, the American side indicated that negotiations became stalled over three key issues. The first concerns keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, a strategically important route for global energy supplies and international trade. The second involves implementing and maintaining a ceasefire in southern Lebanon. The third remains the long-standing dispute surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump issued a strong warning regarding Hezbollah and suggested that additional military action could follow if Iran failed to contain escalating tensions. In response, Iran stated that it remains prepared for any potential confrontation.
Analysts suggest that while the latest meeting did not produce an immediate agreement, it kept diplomatic channels open. However, reaching a lasting peace deal may remain difficult unless deeper disagreements over regional security, ongoing conflicts, and Iran’s nuclear activities can be resolved.
