Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Environment has begun preparations to import around 210,000 metric tonnes of chemical fertilizer by mid-August to maintain adequate supply for the upcoming paddy planting season.
This is expected to be the largest annual fertilizer import target in Nepal’s history, reflecting the government’s effort to reduce shortages during peak agricultural demand.
To secure supply, the government has adopted a multi-channel procurement strategy:
- 30,000 metric tonnes of urea will be imported from India under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement, with arrival targeted for the first week of August.
- The remaining 180,000 metric tonnes will be imported through international competitive tenders from multiple countries.
The tender-based imports include:
- 60,000 metric tonnes of Diammonium Phosphate (DAP)
- 120,000 metric tonnes of urea
Alongside supply management, the ministry has also introduced measures aimed at improving transparency and controlling irregularities in fertilizer distribution.
To address complaints related to shortages, hoarding, or black marketing, the government has launched:
- Hotline Number: 9700099113
- QR-based complaint reporting system
- Service Hours: Daily from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM
The initiative is intended to improve monitoring at the local level and ensure fertilizer reaches farmers during one of Nepal’s most important agricultural seasons.
