Nepal Rastra Bank is set to issue Rs. 45 billion worth of central bank bonds today in an effort to manage the excess liquidity currently present in the banking system.
The bond, titled “Nepal Rastra Bank Bond 2084 ‘Kha’”, will be issued through a competitive online bidding process. Only licensed Class ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ banks and financial institutions are eligible to participate. Bids can be submitted online until 3:00 PM today.
The interest rate will be determined through bidding, rather than being fixed in advance. This mechanism allows the market to determine the return based on demand and liquidity conditions.
The bond carries a maturity period of one year, with the principal repayment scheduled for Asar 17, 2084. Interest payments will be made on a semi-annual basis.
Participating institutions can submit bids starting from a minimum of Rs. 5 crore, and higher bids must be placed in multiples of Rs. 5 crore, up to the total issuance amount of Rs. 45 billion.
According to NRB, the bond can also be used as collateral for borrowing from Nepal Rastra Bank or other banks and financial institutions, making it a liquidity management instrument while providing flexibility for participating institutions.
The issuance reflects NRB’s continued use of open market operations to absorb surplus liquidity and maintain stability in the financial system.
