Nepal has recorded a significant rise in electric vehicle (EV) imports during the first eleven months of the current fiscal year, reflecting the country’s growing transition toward cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
According to data released by the Department of Customs, Nepal imported a total of 10,845 electric vehicles during the review period, with the total import value reaching approximately Rs. 25.56 billion.
The imported vehicles covered multiple power categories ranging from 50 kilowatts to above 200 kilowatts, highlighting the rapid expansion and diversification of Nepal’s electric mobility market.
Mid-Range EVs Lead the Market
Among all imported categories, electric vehicles with power capacities between 51 kilowatts and 100 kilowatts emerged as the most preferred segment among Nepali consumers.
Customs data shows that a total of 6,357 vehicles in this category entered the country during the first eleven months of the fiscal year.
The total import value of these vehicles stood at approximately Rs. 16.50 billion.
The strong performance of this segment suggests that consumers continue to favor vehicles that offer a balance between affordability, driving range, charging efficiency, and suitability for daily urban and intercity travel.
Smaller EV Segment Also Records Strong Growth
Electric vehicles with capacities of up to 50 kilowatts also maintained substantial demand.
During the same period, Nepal imported 3,680 smaller electric vehicles, with a combined import value of approximately Rs. 5.65 billion.
This category has continued to attract buyers looking for more affordable entry points into electric mobility while benefiting from lower operating and maintenance costs.
Consumer Preferences Continue to Shift
The import figures indicate a noticeable change in Nepal’s automobile market, where electric vehicles are increasingly becoming a mainstream transportation choice rather than a niche alternative.
Several factors are contributing to this shift, including:
- Growing consumer awareness of fuel efficiency,
- Lower operating costs compared with conventional vehicles,
- Expanding charging infrastructure,
- Supportive tax structures for EV imports,
- Rising interest in environmentally sustainable transportation.
EV Market Expansion Signals Structural Change
The rising number of imported EVs highlights Nepal’s broader movement toward reducing dependence on fossil fuel-based transportation.
As adoption increases across different vehicle categories and price ranges, electric mobility is expected to play a larger role in shaping the country’s future transport and energy landscape.
The continued growth of both small and mid-capacity EV segments suggests that Nepal’s market is evolving beyond early adopters and entering a phase of wider consumer acceptance.
